10 Films That Unveil The Dark Side Of Sports

6. Foxcatcher

Foxcatcher explores the dark side of the American dream and depicts a true-life story about the seedy side of Olympic wrestling. The film is based on the story of wrestling brothers Mark and Dave Schultz’s tragic interaction with eccentric rich man John DuPont.

The famous 1996 incident ended up with DuPont shooting and killing Dave Schultz. The troubled elitist had weird aspirations to become an athlete and an authority figure for rising athletes. But all his ambitions resulted in was the tragic loss of an American hero.

The obsession those outside the world of sports have for just a taste of glory is unbelievable when showcased in a well-performed and executed Oscar contender. Foxcatcher touches explicitly on the so-called manifest destiny mentality that has been held high by sports culture for so long and powerfully illustrates the consequences that come with it.

The deep look inside what lead to one of sports darkest moments shows that even gold medal winners can still fall hard if the wrong person is put on their team. Foxcatcher is a dark mark in wrestling’s history book.
