Darren Aronofsky is not known for mollycoddling his viewers, but Mother! turns it up to 11, intentionally creating a profoundly unsettling experience from the off that only gets unbearably worse and worse the more you realise it's just an overblown retelling of events from The Bible with Lawrence being Mother Earth.
