10 Films That Worked As Prequels And Sequels
1. Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom
Although it's easy to forget, the Indiana Jones series isn't structured like a traditional trilogy, with the second entry in George Lucas and Steven Spielberg's action adventure saga, The Temple of Doom, taking place an entire year before the events of Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Despite this detail, Temple of Doom's status as a prequel is largely immaterial to the main story. The film doesn't deliver any twists or turns that would cause viewers to reappraise Raiders, and it's largely because of that the perception remains that Temple of Doom is a sequel in the traditional sense.
While that may be the case, the fact remains that the second instalment in the Indiana Jones series is indeed a prequel. Raiders of the Lost Ark takes place in 1936, whereas Doom is set a year prior in 1935.
The third entry in the saga, The Last Crusade, would serve as the first "true" sequel to Raiders, with it being set in 1938 - two years after the first Indy film, and a year before the outbreak of World War II - albeit with a brief flashback to 1912 at the beginning.
