10 Films The Irish Censors Hated

1. I Spit on Your Grave (1978)

i spit on your grave - controversial films I Spit on Your Grave is the tale of Jennifer (Camille Keaton). She is a writer who comes to upstate New York to work on her novel. Unfortunately she attracts the attention of four local yokels who gang rape and sodomise her in what are among the most harrowing scenes in cinema. After she gets herself together, she decides to wreak vengeance on these jerks and dispatches of them in cunning ways such as hanging and castration. This film has had a long, thorny censorship history in many countries but I was rather surprised when it was given an outright ban in 2010 upon its rerelease. It was prohibited on September 14th (my birthday!) on the grounds of gross violence and cruelty towards humans. Meir Zarchi, director of I Spit On Your Grave, found this decision amusing and practically thanked the Irish Censors for bringing more controversy and publicity to his film.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
