10 Films The Irish Censors Hated

2. Romance (1999)

romance Marie has a problem in her love life. Her partner Paul refuses to do the nasty. So she seeks out sexual encounters outside of the relationship on her path to fulfilment and enlightenment. One of the first art house movies to feature explicit sex, Romance would go on to encourage arty film makers to try their hands at smut peddling - see the films The Brown Bunny and Nine Songs. The film showcased explicit copulation among cast members which was unsimulated. It was banned for its explicit sex scenes by the Irish Censors upon its release and from what I can discern from my research, Romance remains banned in Ireland.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
