10 Films The Irish Censors Hated

4. Personal Services (1987)

personal services Based on the real life story of Cynthia Payne - the runner of the infamous "House of Cyn" brothel. Christine is a naive waitress and single mother who rents out apartments to local tarts to pay for her teenage son's tuition. Aided by her friend Shirley, she becomes a call-girl herself and specialises in kinky role play and fetish hijinks with older men. Cynthia is a huge hit and a fount of gossip for the tabloids. Her new found confidence enables her to mend the estranged relationship she has with her father. Compared to other kinky hooker based films such as Crimes of Passion, Personal Services is rather mild. One can only surmise that the Irish Censors thought that the film was a glorification of prostitution and presented it in too frivolous a manner. Incidentally, the director of the film was Terry Jones who had the distinction of having three films simultaneously banned in Ireland (Personal Services along with Life of Brian and The Meaning of Life).

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
