10 Films The Irish Censors Hated

5. Ulysses (1967)

ully Ulysses the movie was based upon Irish writer James Joyce's novel of the same name. I have read the novel, back when I was a precocious 16 year old school girl, and from what I can remember, it is a 1000 page almost stream of conscious-like rendering of a Jewish man's (Leopold Bloom) day wandering about Dublin and meeting another man (Stephen Dedalus). Leopold also has a rather randy wife called Molly. The time period is 1904. I haven't watched the movie but it is said to be very close to the book. Although made in 1967, the ban was only rescinded in Ireland in 2000 which seems surprisingly late for a work based on one of our most celebrated authors.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
