10 Films To Get You In The Mood For David Fincher's Mank

7. Mulholland Drive

Mank Gary Oldman
Universal Pictures

David Lynch's surrealistic masterpiece isn't your typical Hollywood film, but then again, neither will Fincher's be. A dreamy look under the glitter of tinseltown at the broken dreams and shadows, Mulholland Drive is definitely a more unusual and nightmarish picture than Mank will be, yet at the same time engages with the same concerns.

Trying to summarise a Lynch film is a challenge in and of itself. A young dark haired woman, the sole survivor of a car crash on Mulholland Drive, staggers from the hills down into L.A. and sneaks into an apartment, the same apartment that aspiring actress Betty (Naomi Watts) is interning to occupy whilst trying to make it in Hollywood. The dark haired woman calls herself Rita, getting the name from a movie poster in the apartment, as she has no memory of who she is. Together, the two women set off to unravel the mystery of Rita's true identity.

Mulholland Drive is a truly unique cinematic experience and really deserves to be watched on the biggest screen you can find, curtains shut, lights off, and the volume turned well up. Lynch's idiosyncratic film is a peculiarly affecting if nightmarish mystery mired in a half modern half retro L.A. and the Hollywood Studio underbelly, a setting similar to Mank's own.
