10 Films To Get You In The Mood For David Fincher's Mank

8. Sunset Boulevard

Mank Gary Oldman
Paramount

This classic rapier sharp satire of Hollywood's penchant for breaking dreams is told by a cynical writer that very well could be a stand in for a man like Mank. This film is rightfully considered one of the best Hollywood ever produced, even though it is one that savages Hollywood's disingenuousness and cruelty. The film was nominated for 11 oscars way back in 1950, winning three for screenwriting, art direction, and score.

Billy Wilder's film noir tell the story of struggling screenwriter Joe Gillis (William Holden) as he is drawn into the demented fantasy world of former silent screen star Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson), who longs to make a glorious return to the screen.

Engaging with the oftentimes bitter politics of the studios, and of those who get left behind when their glamour starts to fade, Sunset Boulevard could yet serve as an excellent compliment to Mank, when it releases in December.
