7. Moebius (Kim Ki-Duk, 2013) South Korea
Moebius, the most recent picture by Kim Ki-Duk of South Korea, has been called "one of the most powerful and controversial films of the last decade." It won the Best Cinematography Award at this year's Venice Film Festival, where it had it's World Premiere. Ki-Duk has directed 19 feature length films and documentaries, with 8 of those having been previously screened at TIFF. Moebius will be shown on Thurs. 12 at 9:00PM, Fri. 13 at 2:30PM and Sun. 15 at 6PM, as part of the Masters programme. The Thursday screening will be the film's North American Premiere. It has been called a, "twisted family chronicle perched somewhere between psychological thriller, grotesque comedy, and perverse ode to the pleasures of sadomasochism" A, "disturbing yet cathartic film is a potent metaphor for a contemporary society morbidly obsessed with its own sexuality." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l54HX4N_JxM After her husband is caught cheating, his wife tries to cut off his member, but fails. So, instead, she decides that a good way to get back at him would be to cut off their eldest son's penis instead! Her actions end up triggering a violently drastic chain of events that will end up devastating the family. To make things more interesting...the film is wordless- a purely cinematic endeavor. When all is (not) said and done, Moebius is, "a modern Greek tragedy bordering on psychological thriller, a pitchblack comedy, a crazy-weird depiction of pain-induced pleasure in all cases, a sheer work of art"
