10 Films We Said We Wanted But Didn't Go See

4. Ghostbusters (2016)

Since Ghostbusters is one of the most celebrated comedies of all time, studios were always going to try and wrangle a franchise out of it. Even though Ghostbusters II was a dud, the nostalgia was too great for fans. They still wanted more.

After Dan Aykroyd went through a dozen scripts over nearly 20 years, Sony decided to reboot the film with a female cast playing the titular phantom hunters. Moviegoers were, to put it mildly, unpleased. Millions of people saw the gender-swapped cast as a stunt and thus, boycotted the film.

Now, it's easy to blame the film's failure on trolls condemning the movie before it came out but there were a lot of other factors. Not only were the trailers unfunny, it wasn't clear whether the film was a remake or a sequel. Heck, viewers weren't sure what the title was (Was "Answer the Call" part of the film's title or the tagline?) If a movie can't make its trailer look good or its title clear, it is in serious trouble.

Director, Paul Feig, stated Ghostbusters needed to earn $500 million to get a sequel. Unfortunately, it didn't earn half of that and so, its proposed follow-ups were canned.
