10 Films We Said We Wanted But Didn't Go See

3. Tron: Legacy

Blade Runner 2049
Disney

In Tron, Jeff Bridge's character, Flynn, finds himself trapped in a virtual world after he is sucked into a video game. It's a fascinating concept but the film was doomed to fail, simply because it was impossible to market. Video games may bring in twice the revenue of cinema nowadays but when this sci-fi flick was released in 1982, they were still in their infancy. Obviously, there were video game fanboys who did see the film but they were a niche audience.

But as time went on, Tron's cult status swelled and mainstream audiences were eager to see those light cycles again with modern CGI. With video games being more popular than ever, a Tron sequel looked like it had a lot more appeal.

Tron: Legacy may be misremembered as a flop but it actually earned $400 million on a $170 million budget, making it a success. But this is a Disney property we are talking about. They thought Rise of a Skywalker was a disappointment because it "only" made a billion dollars. Because Tron: Legacy failed to reach Disney's projections, the sequel was scrapped and the series has been in limbo ever since.
