10 Films Which Accidentally Predicted The Future

7. Real Life Fight Clubs - Fight Club

Birdman Michael Keaton
20th Century Fox

No one could have predicted that this 1999 film, based on the revolutionary 90s novel by Chuck Palahniuk, which had bombed at the box office would go on to have such a lasting legacy and spawn a fanatic cult following 20 years later.

Perhaps the strangest phenomenon that Fight Club seemed to predict was the rise of real life fight clubs which cropped up all over America in the years after its release. Seemingly the men who had watched Fight Club and been inspired to start their own uber-masculine basement brawls had not fully understood David Fincher's satirical tone and deliberate homoeroticism he conjured up in the film.

While it is most likely the case that these copycat fight clubs are examples of life imitating art, there are examples throughout history of these gatherings preceding both the film and novel.

Either way, it is incredible that the film gave birth to the idea of these mythical fight clubs which groups of rowdy men in California, New Jersey and Texas among other places chose to turn into a reality.

It's even more incredible that they missed the film critiquing the mentality that leads to this behaviour.
