10 Films Which Accidentally Predicted The Future

8. River Phoenix's Fate - Stand By Me

Birdman Michael Keaton
Columbia Pictures

Stand By Me is considered by many as the definitive Stephen King adaptation, an achievement considering the sheer amount of the King of Horror's works which have been turned into films.

Starring an incredible cast of child stars, it is the performances of Corey Feldman and River Phoenix which stand out in the 1980s coming-of-age classic. The emotional weight of the film's epilogue has since been enhanced after Phoenix's untimely death aged just 23, similar to the ill-fated character he was playing.

The film ends with the narrator summarising the fate of all of the children, including the revelation that Phoenix's character, Chris, had become a lawyer and one day attempted to break up a fight and was killed himself in the process.

While the only similarity that actor and character share in this instance is an untimely death in their 20s, it is strange that in the novel's epilogue three out of the four boys die as young men but in the film this was changed to just Phoenix's character.
