8. The Guilt Trip
Seth Rogen is usually a pretty consistent guy. Stoner comedies are his niche (Pineapple Express, This Is The End, Knocked Up). They are all decent films. However, when he ventures out of his comfort zones, the results leave something to be desired. Thats where The Guilt Trip comes in. If you thought coupling Rogen with Barbara Streisand was a questionable decision, youve heard nothing. The film sees Rogen and Streisand travelling across America. Streisand is brought along under the guise that Rogen is lonely on his business trips. But what she isnt told is that Rogen is actually playing cupid, trying to set up his mother with a former flame. As a plot, its a bit of stretch. But one of the films biggest faux pas is slotting into predictability. Theres nothing creative or inventive about the film. On their travels, the relationship between over bearing mother and smothered son is brought to the forefront, as youd expect. But everything solves itself in some rather generic, dull manner. Rogen is much better in his wheelhouse, or when he has a hand in writing the script, as he can at least be a tad creative.
