10 Films You Didn’t Realise Became TV Shows
8. Friday: The Animated Series
There have been a number of attempts to remake popular movies into an animated series over the years. Whereas spin-offs of The Mask and The Pink Panther proved inspired choices, the same can't be said about shows based on The Blues Brothers, Austin Powers and Napoleon Dynamite, which all faired much worse. Friday: The Animated Series sadly falls into the latter category.
Friday was a hugely popular film released in the mid-90s that went on to spawn several sequels. What people may not remember, however, is the short lived animated series that ran for just 8 episodes in 2007.
The animated series was a loosely based on the first two films, Friday and Next Friday. It focused on the day to day lives of friends Craig and Smokey as they try to shuffle through the chaos of living in Los Angeles. Neither Ice Cube nor Chris Tucker returned to reprise their roles, and they were instead replaced by veteran voice actors, Phil LaMarr (Samurai Jack) and Khary Payton (The Walking Dead's Ezekiel).
Due to airing on MTV2, much of the character of the film's had to be stripped away, reducing its humour to a tame, and rather dull version of itself. As you would imagine, the flaws didn't sit well with fans, and it was soon cancelled a few weeks later.
