10 Final Girls Who Should Return For A Horror Movie Sequel

7. Kristen McKey - The Strangers

The Strangers
Rogue Pictures

A hugely effective horror that does a lot with a little, The Strangers takes a tiny cast and a single location and makes something pretty special.

The oft-underrated Liv Tyler stars as Kristen, a woman staying with her boyfriend at his childhood home. The pair are at loggerheads as we open over a botched proposal, but when two intruders descend on the house, they’re forced to put their differences aside in the hope of staying alive.

It’s a home invasion movie in the vein of Straw Dogs or Michael Hanneke’s chilly Funny Games, an investigation of random violence. There's much more focus on characterisation here, though. Over the course of the ordeal, the battling couple are forced to cooperate and come together.

Tyler's performance is committed but downplayed and naturalistic. She's neither a gung ho action hero nor the kind of shrieking victim these films used to be based around - instead she tackles the matter like a true survivor, someone desperate to get out this situation by any means.

This toughness and grit is missing from the film's sequel, which descends quickly into schlock and silliness. The franchise looks to roll on - there was little point keeping Kristen alive if she's not going to come back, so fingers crossed for the future of the series.
