10 Flaws Which Prevented Max: Fury Road From Being Perfect

3. Nux's Death Following Redemption Cliché

One of the most common aspects of large scale action movies is the way in which the villains are frequently one dimensional - often they're more like the cloned soldiers from the Star Wars prequels than they are individual human beings, and one of the great things about Fury Road is how Miller has given the War Boys touches which make them feel unique. Nux (played by Nicholas Hoult), the War Boy who switches sides and ends up helping the wives escape from Immortan Joe, is a great example of how a good film can take a generic soldier and transform them into a fully rounded character with hopes and dreams, fears and desires. Compared to Furiosa and Max's laconic presence, he's also the character with the most developed arc. The story of his passage from War Boy to protector of the wives is superbly handled, yet his final death - sacrificing himself for the greater good - is an overused cliché which audiences have seen far too many times before.
