6. Them (2006)
French cinema is typically associated with romantic comedies like Amelie and although these are indeed popular exports, it would be a mistake to think thats the only style French film-makers have to offer. Some of the countrys most popular movies have explored the darker side of human nature in controversial ways, including Irreversible, La Haine and the horror film Them. Directed by David Moreau and Xavier Palud, the story of Them follows a young teacher called Clementine and her husband who live in a remote country house. After noticing a car crash on the side of the road near their home, unusual things begin to happen inside the couple's house, until they soon realize that they're being terrorized by teenage intruders who will stop at nothing until they're both dead. Them does an incredible job of maintaining the tension throughout its lean 74 minute running time, creating a constant sense of dread as things get worse and worse for the poor couple. Supposedly based on real events, Them will make you think twice before you tell unruly teenagers to behave properly. Just keep on walking...
