10 Foreign Language Horrors That You Must See

9. The Silent House

Despite some questionable acting and one of the biggest WTF? Endings, The Silent House makes it into this top ten for sheer ambition and originality. The American remake earlier this year was below par held together only by the acting calibre of its lead Elizabeth Olsen, but don't let that put you off. This unsuspecting little Uruguayan film is a masterclass in technical film-making and has a brilliant sense of tension throughout. Director, Gustavo Hernandes went out on a limb when he decided to shoot an entire movie in one continuous take. The small team of actors and crew had to run the whole narrative in real time countless times before every element was perfect. No cut-aways, no flashbacks just86 minutes of unrelenting uneasiness that creep towards a climax that will leave you reeling. Certainly flawed, The Silent House is not the most brilliantly acted horror you are likely to see. Florencia Colucci perhaps doesn't have enough psychological depth to carry the movie without hitting the same notes over and over- but it certainly is an achievement in original film-making and has a story strong enough to grip you throughout.
