8. Funny Games
Of course Michael Haneke returned to his much loved classic to create an almost shot-for-shot remake with an American cast headed up by Naomi Watts and Tim Roth. But top honours has to go to his 1997 original for creating two of the most memorable villains of any genre and presenting violence to us in such an unexpected and contemplative way. George and Ann are expecting a relaxing stay at their holiday home with their young son and loyal pet alsatian. The setting is idyllic but what the family come to experience over one hellish night is anything but the tranquility they were expecting. Held captive in their own home by a seemingly affable twosome appearing as if from nowhere, they are subjected to all manner of degrading and psychologically torturous 'games' as they are challenged to make it to the next morning alive. Less of a horror film, more of an artistic rumination on the nature of violence and our perception of evil, Funny Games is a classic film in every sense. Genuinely disturbing and featuring some riveting performances from every member of the cast Haneke is to be applauded for creating such a truly unforgettable 106 minutes of hell

A movie lover like no other Chelsey has the likes of Hobo With a Shotgun sitting side by side with Hitchcock, Survival of the Dead next to Shakespeare. Of course she has a soft spot for horror and has been consuming all manner of the blood-thirsty and undead for as long as she can remember but also appreciates every aspect of global movie-making. Just don't get her started on Michael Bay- or Nicolas Cage......
