10 Forgotten 90s Horror Movies You MUST Watch
9. Tetsuo II: Body Hammer
Although Shin's Tsukamoto has had an astounding career, none of his work can compare to his directorial debut, Tetsuo: The Iron Man, which centres around two rivals transforming into metallic monstrosities. Due to the chaotic editing, WTF premise, and onslaught of mentally-scarring imagery, it goes without saying that there's no other movie quite like it.
Well, except for the sequel. In Tetsuo II: Body Hammer, machine worshippers kidnap the son of a salaryman called Tamaguchi. When Tamaguchi unlocks his dormant metallic powers (as you do) he prepares to use his newfound abilities to exact his revenge.
Rather than maintaining the artistic integrity of its predecessor, the sequel feels more like a blockbuster. Nevertheless, Body Hammer should satiate cyberpunk sci-fi fans. The body-horror extraordinaire has a noticeably bigger budget, allowing for better practical effects, more elaborate set pieces, and of course, colour. Similar to Evil Dead 2, the follow-up feels like a retooling of the original, where the violence, action, and gore have been ramped up to 11.
There's more of a coherent story this time around, but it's more enjoyable to just sit back and enjoy Body Hammer's relentless chaos than trying to figure out what the heck is going on.
