10 Forgotten 90s Horror Movies You MUST Watch

Though it can take time for even the most talented filmmakers to fine-tune their skills, Guillermo del Toro proved he was a natural with his directorial debut, Cronos.

The horror drama follows an elderly antiques dealer called Jesus Gris, who stumbles upon a scarab-like device called Cronos. When the mechanism cuts into Jesus' skin and filters his blood, Jesus starts to look and feel younger. After Jesus develops a craving for blood, he realises his rejuvenation has come with a hefty price.

Vampire tales can easily come across as cliched and schlocky, so it's refreshing to see del Toro put a creative spin on the overdone trope. The fact the story contains no true vampires makes Jesus' dilemma more human and therefore, more frightening.

Cronos doesn't have any conventional scares, but it's pretty tough to sit through, especially when the protagonist's skin begins rotting away or when he's compelled to lap blood off a dirty floor.

It's a little rough around the edges, but Cronos is still one of del Toro's best films, which is an impressive feat considering the prosperous career the Mexican filmmaker has had.
