10 Forgotten 90s Horror Movies You MUST Watch

5. The Resurrected

Lord Of Illusions
Lionsgate

Dan O' Bannon's Return of the Living Dead was such a masterful zomedy, so it's a real shame he wasn't given many directorial assignments in its wake. The Alien screenwriter's follow-up, The Resurrected, failed to receive a theatrical release, which encouraged O'Bannon to retire as a director. Upon revisiting this HP Lovecraft adaptation, however, it's unclear why it sank without a trace.

The Resurrected opens with Claire Ward hiring a private detective to spy on her husband, who conducts peculiar experiments in his carriage house. Over time, Claire regrets ever stumbling upon her other half's dark secret.

Although Lovecraft's talent in dark fantasy fiction is undeniable, the best filmmakers struggle to adapt his work. And yet, O'Bannon knocks it out of the park, exploring many staples of the horror novelist, including cosmicism, nihilism, and humanity's hopeless desire to cheat death.

Even though the nightmarish scares are introduced late, The Resurrected from the beginning, especially when Claire starts making sense of her husband's deranged actions. It's somewhat predictable (thanks to the title and the spoiler-filled trailer) but that doesn't stop every scene from brimming with palatable tension.

It escaped the masses' attention in its day, but The Resurrected has all the workings of a cult classic.
