10 Forgotten 90s Horror Movies You MUST Watch
4. Dust Devil
Richard Stanley doesn't have the best luck when it comes to filmmaking. Not only was the South African director fired days into the infamous production of The Island of Dr Moreau, but his cut of Dust Devil was also obliterated by the studio.
By the time Stanley fixed things with his director's cut, any potential buzz for Dust Devil had shrivelled up. That said, anyone who can get a copy of Dust Devil: The Final Cut will understand why the producers should've never touched the original.
In this Western slasher, a devious drifter roams the desert, looking for vulnerable people to prey on. After a woman dumps her husband, Dust Devil prepares to track her down and murder her. While a police officer pursues the maniac, he discovers his target is far more dangerous than anyone could imagine.
At first, Dust Devil feels like a by-the-numbers serial killer flick or a Hitcher rip-off. But due to its spiritual themes and nods to the occult, it quickly becomes apparent this story is anything but straightforward.
Dust Devil proves to be unique, in terms of story and visuals. It explores aspects of mythology rarely depicted in film, so the narrative doesn't feel derivative and trite. Thanks to the dreamlike imagery, brutal violence, and majestic shots of the Namibian desert, Dust Devil is a visual powerhouse from beginning to end.
Dust Devil is worth a go, but the director's cut is a must-watch for anyone looking for an unconventional slasher.
