From an actor or director moving on to other things to a lack of critical success, there are many reasons why sequels never appear. When you get unnecessary follow-ups like The Hangover 2 and 3 (wasn't one night enough?), there's nothing more frustrating than discovering your favourite movie franchise is being rebooted or waiting for the sequel that never comes. Rebooting a franchise is an easy way to attract bigger audiences, particularly when it is viewed as tired or lacklustre. The problem is, ignoring the version that came before often results in unresolved storylines or characters that have no definitive end to their journey. Sometimes movie franchises cause their own set of problems. A sequel ties up all loose threads and then another one comes along that sends a franchise off in a new direction. These sequels are often met with negative reviews and the appetite for more films quickly evaporates, leaving audiences with plenty of unanswered questions.
