10 Forgotten Remote Outpost Horror Movie Gems

8. Them

Outland 1981
David Moreau and Xavier Palud

From 2006 comes Them, a French-Romanian co-production originally released under the French title “Ils”. Kudos to anyone who had already worked that out. High school French has served you well.

Clémentine (Olivia Bonamy) is a teacher who has just relocated to Bucharest from France along with her boyfriend Lucas (Michaël Cohen). They take up residence in their new house in the country, far away from the hubbub of civilisation. Everything seems perfect at first, until the couple realise that they are not alone.

Them, which was a joint directorial effort from David Moreau and Xavier Palud, combines the terror of two of horror’s most enduring sub-genres - the cabin in the woods story and the home invasion. Clémentine and Lucas are in way over their heads as their dream home turns into a nightmare - a nightmare that intensifies when the identity of their attackers is revealed.

This twist is a pretty integral part of the movie, so watch it if you want to find out what it is.

Tense, claustrophobic, and deeply disturbing, Them is not one to watch if you’re ever thinking about moving out of the city.
