10 Formerly Great Film Roles That Are Horribly Awkward Today
3. Nicole Kidman & Tom Cruise Eyes Wide Shut
Admitting the yearn for infidelity in a scene that is little bit too convinving should be enough evidence that this was Art imitating life. Judging from this very long scene alone, it is almost impossible not to see the connection despite the denying of both parties that long hours, delays in production and constant strain via Stanley Kubrick's direction had nothing to do with their split. Kidman denies that their divorce was contributed to by the filming of Eyes Wide Shut, effectivley stating that the attitude portrayed in the film to their relationship wasn't telling of how they felt at the time:
"On screen, the husband and wife are at odds, and Stanley wanted to use our marriage as a supposed reality. He used the movie as provocation, pretending it was our sex life. Which we weren't oblivious to, but obviously it wasn't us."
Even if this is true, considering the calibre of acting and the enthusiasm for cheating on each other on show from a pair who are usually wooden and same-y, it is almost impossible to ignore the inconvenient feeling this film ends up mustering in retrospect.
