10 Franchises Other Than Star Wars That Will Return... Whether You Like It Or Not

3. Jaws

As Jaws is commonly regarded as the film that began the trend of the "summer blockbuster" it is inevitable that it will be remade one day. The inevitability looked like it may have been about to happen three years ago when reports surfaced that Universal was planning a remake/reboot of one of their most recognisable and sacred properties, but since then news has been thin on the ground, though it still feels like it's simply a matter of time. As the quintessential cinematic tale of "Man Versus Beast" it has arguably already been remade countless times, with its template being used for every film which pits humanity against nature's predators, including huge references in the recent Godzilla reboot. The only differences tend to be that Bruce the shark has found himself recast as a swarm of killer-bees, or a school of piranhas, or as a wild boar. It has also been the recipient of one decent yet inferior sequel, a shameful threequel, and one of the worst films ever made to cap the series off. With this in mind it is safe to assume that any approach to remaking Jaws will discard the continuation route, and focus on a modern retelling of the story. Whichever method is taken one thing is certain; remaking Jaws is as cynical a money-making exercise as can be imagined, and has to be regarded as the single motivation for bringing the franchise back. In many ways this makes the idea easy to understand, it is a fail-safe, low-risk venture, even if it cost $120-$200 million to produce it would double its budget on opening weekend on the strength of name alone. When it does happen the reasons cited will no doubt be the "outdated practical effects" and the need to "bring Jaws to a new audience" but if anything Jaws is proof positive that a film is far more than just its visual effects, a point that will be hammered home when the unwanted reboot eventually does arrive.
