10 Franchises That Should've Quit After Two Films

5. Sam Raimi's Spider-Man

Spider-Man 3 is widely regarded as one of the worst superhero films of all time and this was mainly due to studio interference as Sony wanted Venom to play a major role in the third film much to the detriment of the story.

Before this we had been introduced to the web slinger in Sam Raimi's 2002 classic origin story which was so faithful to the bright cartoony world of NYC that it could very well have been taken directly from the pages of the 60s comic books. Spider-Man 2 was the pinnacle of the 00s superhero craze as it managed to triumphantly balance the struggle Peter Parker goes through while showcasing the incredible Spider-Men set pieces we know and love.

If Sam Raimi had left it there, these Spider-Man films would be heralded as classics and a time capsule for future filmmakers to witness what a successful 00s superhero saga looked like. However, Spider-Man 3 was released in 2007 and is sadly now as much a part of the legacy of these films - immortalised with its famous Emo Peter Parker sequence - as its successful predecessors.

An avid cinephile, love Trainspotting (the film, not the hobby), like watching bad films ironically (The Room, Cats) and hate my over-reliance on brackets (they’re handy for a quick aside though).
