10 Franchises That Should've Quit After Two Films

6. Shrek

Terminator Salvation T-800
Dreamworks

Shrek is a classic cartoon fantasy epic which introduced an unlikely green Scottish ogre as its protagonist and Shrek 2 is arguably the rare beast of a sequel which improves on its original. Anything after these two pioneers of animation is best forgotten.

The problem with Shrek the Third and Shrek Forever After may be the decision to introduce the Ogre children which tied Fiona and Shrek down for the final two entries. The final Shrek film had to magic them out of existence to create a compelling narrative and by doing so marginally improved on Shrek the Third.

Whatever spark these sequels were unable to recover, they at least had the grace to eventually bow out after outstaying their welcome for two forgettable films. However, as is the case with any series which has lain dormant for 10 years or more, there are constant rumours of a reboot in the near future. Please Hollywood, just leave Shrek alone.

THE OFFENDING SEQUEL(S) ROTTEN TOMATOES SCORE: Shrek the Third - 41%, Shrek Forever After - 58%

An avid cinephile, love Trainspotting (the film, not the hobby), like watching bad films ironically (The Room, Cats) and hate my over-reliance on brackets (they’re handy for a quick aside though).
