10 French Horror Movies You Need To See

9. Climax

Gaspar Noe has had some serious hard hitters over the years, becoming a name notorious for difficult to watch sequences and intense, visceral filmmaking. No film encapsulates that quite as effectively as Irreversible, the rape revenge story told in broken narrative chunks that features one of the most gruelling scenes to ever unfold in the genre, but Climax makes a case for coming close.

When a group of dancers come together to spend a night rehearsing in an old school building, a little bit of sangria is on the cards to spice up their evening. What they aren't counting on is that spice to go full ghost pepper when someone slips LSD into the mix, resulting in a strange, hallucinatory experience that becomes more and more nightmarish as the group carries on with their evening.

And, as is par for the course now, there's some body horror that will have you reeling in shock. As Noe himself put it: “You despised I Stand Alone, you hated Irréversible, you loathed Enter the Void, you cursed Love, now try Climax.”
