10 French Horror Movies You Need To See

8. Possession

Possession Film
Gaumont

A seriously mixed up 1980's movie, Possession is the aptly titled film that tells a story woven between a woman's love life and her mental state. Anna reunites with her husband Mark after he returns from work and inexplicably wants a divorce, with him later discovering a lover named Heinrich as the potential cause - it all sounds like a pretty standard drama until you bring malformed creatures, doppelgängers, and refrigerated body parts into the mix. Ah, there we are, a classic in the making.

Consistently rated highly by critics whilst straddling the 'video nasty' branding, Possession is a strange story that shows far more than it tells, leaving the watcher to try and unravel Anna's bizarre actions and reactions in the process.

It's dark and unpleasant, as all the best movies are, and will have you enraptured by the leading lady's intense performance alone. You've never seen someone freak out until you've seen Isabelle Adjani freak out, as the old saying goes.
