10 Funniest Characters In Sci-Fi Movie History

4. Mathesar - Galaxy Quest

If there is a film that doesn't get enough recognition it's Galaxy Quest. This utterly hilarious sci-fi comedy and commentary on the sci-fi genre in general is one of the most underrated films of all time. Although it performed well at the box office upon its release in 1999 and contains a truly incredible cast, it isn't talked about often enough. Well, not on my watch!

As I just mentioned, there are so many characters to choose from, whether it's Alan Rickman's portrayal of a serious thespian painfully typecast by his role as a Spock-like character or Sigourney Weaver who wonderfully satirizes the helpless damsel on board a space ship whose only job is to repeat what the computer says. However, this spot on the list is reserved for Enrico Colantoni who plays Mathesar, the leader of the Therminians, a people who have based their life around Galaxy Quest's teachings.

Everything about Mathesar's character is hilarious, from the way he walks to his speech patterns and his reactions to being in the presence of Commander Taggart (Tim Allen). If you haven't seen it, it's worth watching just for Mathesar's performance. Also, be sure to look out for a young Rainn Wilson too.

I see my role at WhatCulture the same way my wife sees my role as a lover: I contribute in a very small way, my presence is barely noticeable and I’m not entirely sure if the laughter is at me or with me.
