10 Funniest Characters In Sci-Fi Movie History

3. Dr. Peter Venkman - Ghostbusters

1984 was one hell of a year for comedy movies and sci fi movies with the likes of Beverly Hills Cops, Police Academy and Terminator but nothing quite came close to the hilarity and originality of Ghostbusters. The cast featured the likes of Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis all of whom were absolute mega stars in the 80s. Despite all of that comedy talent on display, there was one man who stole the show and that was Dr. Peter Venkman played by everybody's favourite ginger cat, Bill Murray.

Venkman is the character that helped Bill Murray find his perfect role: a cocky, smart-mouthed badass who always has the last sarcastic word. The directors soon realised that all they had to do was stand back and let Murray do his thing which resulted in classic lines such as "Human sacrifice, cats and dogs living together, mass hysteria!" and "We came, we saw, we kicked ass."

Murray returned as Dr. Venkman in the 1989 sequel Ghostbusters II, and, it's also been confirmed that he will return for Ghostbusters: Afterlife in 2021 with the original cast and Paul Rudd. Can't wait!

I see my role at WhatCulture the same way my wife sees my role as a lover: I contribute in a very small way, my presence is barely noticeable and I’m not entirely sure if the laughter is at me or with me.
