Which of J.K. Rowling's funniest characters will make it to the top of the list?

The comedic side of the Harry Potter series was never at the forefront of either the books or the films. Yet within J.K. Rowling’s extensive roster of characters there were a number of individuals whose humour was a key aspect of their identity.

Much of this humour came in the form of dialogue, though there were moments of practical comedy from time to time as well.

There were also a number of individuals whose comedic presence certainly wasn’t evident in the immediate sense. Indeed, some of the funniest characters could be equally frightening when they wanted to be.

Granted, there were few laugh-out-loud moments throughout Harry Potter, but even the darker entries in the franchise had some degree of humour. Given that the series is not particularly famous for its comedic elements, it is worth giving some overdue credit to the funniest characters in the magical world…

10. Neville Longbottom

Neville Longbottom had one of the best arcs in the Harry Potter series. His transformation from an accident-prone, forgetful boy to a brave warrior made for a highly satisfactory evolution. However, before he became the hero he was destined to be, Neville was frequently amusing.

Neville’s comedy value was often a product of his physical ineptitude rather than his dialogue. During his time at Hogwarts, he managed to land himself in a number of unfortunate scenarios, the worst of which was his disastrous flying lesson in The Philosopher’s Stone.

His antics only continued in The Chamber of Secrets when he collapsed during a Herbology class and was then set upon by a group of pixies in Defence Against the Dark Arts.

In The Goblet of Fire, Neville developed an unexpected fondness for dancing. This alone was not particularly funny, but seeing Harry and Ron’s reaction to their friend’s new hobby certainly was.

It’s a shame that this side of Neville couldn’t have been more prevalent in the latter stages of the series, as his many unfortunate incidents were always entertaining.
