6. Marky Mark Talks To A Plant - The Happening
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhmEo-46vUQ M. Night Shyamalan has been in an awful slump ever since the hit-or-miss The Village in 2004. All three of his films since have been panned by critics, making it very clear that Shyamalan is no longer the critical darling he was after 1999's The Sixth Sense. The Happening might be the worst Shamalayan film of them all, which is saying a lot. The premise is that people all over the world start committing mass suicide for what at first appears to be no reason. The real reason though is that the plants are responsible for the murders, presumably as a way to get revenge for not being watered enough. Mark Wahlberg is the everyman hero of the tale and he somewhat has an understanding of how plants work since he's a high school science teacher. It's not Wahlberg's most believable role, but he at least gives a decent effort despite the implausibility of him being a teacher. The selected scene here totally embodies the ridiculous and implausible scenario surrounding the mass deaths. While hiding in an old lady's house, Wahlberg confronts a plant and asks it why these attacks are happening. Although a talking plant wouldn't be all that shocking in this film, the plastic plant remains quiet and Wahlberg realizes he's talking to an inanimate object. It's kind of a watershed moment both for Wahlberg's character and also for audience members, who now realise just how awful this movie is.
