Hela is actually the daughter of a different incarnation of Loki who had died during a previous Asgardian Ragnarok (a great battle), who conspired on numerous occasions with the version of Loki we all know in the comics in order to carry out a number of evil schemes - including bringing about another Ragnarok by slaying the god Balder then attacking Asgard. She is immensely powerful - possessing power closer to the levels of Odin than the likes of Loki and Thor - and is a goddess of Death (with whom she has a pact which allows her to claim the souls of any worshipper of the Asgardians and the Asgardians themselves and take them to Hel or Niffleheim). This link with Death could also give her a link to Thanos, who obsesses over Death in the comics and who has already been hinted as doing so in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Thanos smirked when told that to challenge Earth would be to "court death"). If the guys at Marvel Studios don't want to jump to the power levels of Surtur in the next Thor movie, Hela is the next logical choice for the villain and Loki would surely be conspiring with her.
