10 Futuristic Sci-Fi Movies That Now Take Place In The Past

1. Blade Runner

Blade Runner's depiction of a dystopian 2019 Los Angeles ended up being pretty far off the mark, although the City of Angels is every bit as muggy as Ridley Scott thought it would be. We'll have to wait a while yet before we find out how well the sequel got on with its vision for 2049, but hopefully we won't all be living in densely populated cities controlled largely by authoritarian forces and megalomaniac corporations. That would be awful.

As is the case with almost every emerging technology, as soon as engineers have mastered robots people are going to want to f*ck them, and the sex doll industry is already leading the charge when it comes to lifelike companions. Blade Runner's use of virtual assistants has also become a part of everyday life, with a lot of people having almost their entire home operated by the use of voice commands.

The heavy use of photographs as one of the movie's main narrative devices is probably lost on the younger generations, with Polaroid cameras now mostly used by hipsters who then take pictures of them on a smartphone and post them on social media. Blade Runner, whichever cut you prefer, is still one of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made but thankfully it didn't present an accurate vision of where we'd find ourselves by the end of the 2010s.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
