10 Genius Blockbuster Movie Subversions
6. Rocketman
What You Thought
Walking into Rocketman with the expectations set by the Rami Malek vehicle, Bohemian Rhapsody, would mean setting yourself up for a biopic based in realism, serenaded by the music that lured you through the cinema door.
What It Actually Was
Rocketman, denouncing those preconceived notions of what this film would be, did things its own way by creating a musical re-telling of the story from John's perspective in an AA meeting.
The flamboyance and constant reassessment of what the reality of the story actually is, based on what John wants to tell us, makes this film define itself as an entity, set apart from Rhapsody.
Egerton's performance alone, singing in the style of the iconic entertainer in some truly spectacular sequences (The Troubadour scene's magical fantasising of Crocodile Rock, a highlight), will force the Academy to stand up and take notice. Who would've predicted that a year ago?
