10 Genuine Lessons Batman V Superman Can Learn From Batman & Robin

5. Treat The Wider DC Pantheon Seriously

The Mistake Batman And Robin Made: The opening of Batman & Robin is one of the worst sequences in cinema. After a run of dutch-angled shots of the pair's rubber suits - crotch and all - to the sound of rejected Terminator sound effects, the Batmobile rises and Robin quips he wants one because "chicks dig the car," to which Batman remarks, "This is why Superman works alone." Ha? It sets up very early on that the film has no aspirations to present anything novel, but the Superman joke in particular is a pretty low-blow, showing a real contempt for the wider scale of the source material. It's endemic of the state of superhero cinema at the time (and the film's approach to its own source), but that doesn't make it any easier to excuse. Will Dawn Of Justice Learn The Lesson? When Batman & Robin was made, the simple notion that anyone outside of the World's Finest could support their own movie was a joke (and even Superman was a shaky prospect). Now, in a post-Guardians Of The Galaxy world where Iron Man is the biggest hero on the planet, embracing that wider continuity is not only beneficial, but necessary. And, with all those extra characters actually popping up in Batman V Superman (and the more joke-prone heroes like Aquaman drawing from their grittier representations) it's looking like things are being taken very seriously this time. If the rumours of joke-less movies are true, maybe too seriously.
