The Main Offender: Every Action Film, Ever

If there's a goon with a gun coming for you, and you find yourself trapped in a two-way battle, exchanging shots from across the room, while cowering behind a table, or bin, or really anything just about big enough to cover your vital organs will be absolutely fine. Chances are, said goon won't have the skills to pick you out from that distance, or nick a limb that's poking out, and the barrier will definitely be sturdy enough to withstand bullets, made of metal, fired at great velocity, no matter what the barrier is made of. Especially when it's made of wood, or thin-pressed sheet metal.

The Reality Bullets, which tend to be made of hard metal, and propelled at vast speeds, tend to not be stopped by wood, or thin metal, or even handily placed bibles or plot devices hidden in heroes pockets. They might be diverted slightly, perhaps, but actual, real science would suggest that the real beauty of a bullet is that is a merciless devil with the propensity to destroy all manner of things.

So, no amount of hiding behind a couch, or a table, or a wall, or a vehicle, or another, rather unfortunate body will stop the trajectory of the bullet. Even trees are pretty useless. Just run away instead.
