10 Giant Movie Plot Holes That Everyone Chooses To Ignore

4. Cypher's Betrayal Shouldn't Even Be Able To Happen - The Matrix

The Wachowskis' The Matrix is, despite the years and rubbish sequels that have passed, still one of the greatest science fiction movies of all time. It's an uncannily smart, visually resplendent blockbuster with vast philosophical knowledge that also features some of the best action scenes of the last century.

And all of the chaos in The Matrix, resulting in Neo's awakening as The One (which then continues through to the sequels, but no one really cares about those), begins with Joe Pantoliano's Cypher and his secret meeting of betrayal with Agent Smith inside The Matrix. With the catch being that Cypher shouldn't even be able to plug in and make sneaky deals with agents in the first place.

That's because Cypher would require someone to jack him into The Matrix and run the console while he's in there - meaning the Wachowskis disobeyed one of their film's basic rules by having Cypher 'sneak' in to meet Smith, and that the catalyst for the final two-thirds of the film is actually a plot hole. Those action sequences are still awesome though!
