10 God-Awful Horror Films (With Amazing Kills)

3. Deep Rising

Piranha 3D Derrick
Buena Vista Pictures

Deep Rising is hampered by lousy performances, unfunny dialogue, and really, really dated special effects. If you thought the CGI'd sea monster looked bad in 1998, it's a lot worse by today's standards.

For all its faults, you'll be mesmerised by all the innovative ways our ensemble pop their clogs. Rather than eating its victims, the Octalus monster drinks them before regurgitating their solid remains. So, when our lead characters arrive on an ocean liner that's been picked clean by the marine creature, all they find is a multitude of semi-digested skeletons.

Also, the kills themselves are awesome (and disgusting). The Octalus' tentacles drags passengers into toilets and pipes, causing them to burst into fountains of blood. When Djimon Hounsou's character is unexpectedly axed off with...um... an axe, it scares the hell out of you. When smug twerp Canton gets his comeuppance, you can't help but cheer. Even though Hanover was a murderer, you feel bad when he gets ensnared by the Octalus' tentacles, knowing he's doomed to experience a slow and painful death.

And let's be honest – who wasn’t traumatised when the Octalus vomited up a half-eaten Billy?
