10 Golden Age Scandals Hollywood Wants You To Forget
6. Elizabeth Taylor & Eddie Fisher’s Affair
Screen legend Elizabeth Taylor was perhaps as well known for her film career as she was for her prolific love life. She boasted a total of seven husbands and walked down the aisle eight times (twice with Richard Burton) but it was her relationship with Carrie Fisher’s dad, crooner Eddie Fisher, that caused the most outrage.
Taylor’s third marriage to film producer Mike Todd, the only of her marriages not to end in divorce, was sadly cut short when Todd died in a plane crash in 1958. Luckily for Taylor, Todd’s friend Fisher was there to provide comfort while she grieved which quickly turned into a romantic relationship. Which would have been fine, if a bit distasteful, had Fisher not been married to Taylor’s close friend Debbie Reynolds at the time. For her blatant disregard of the hoe code, Taylor was branded a homewrecker by the press.
Fisher became Taylor’s fourth husband after his divorce from Reynolds was finalised. Funnily enough, their marriage also ended a few years later after Taylor met and had an affair with her future two-time husband Richard Burton while filming Cleopatra, kick-starting their notoriously fiery union.
Taylor and Burton married for the first time in 1964 just nine days after her divorce from Fisher was decreed and Fisher went on to marry actress and singer Connie Stevens. Taylor and Reynolds eventually buried the hatchet, though Reynolds did state in an interview after Taylor’s death that “You just had to make sure you kept your husband in the garage if ever she came to visit”. Claws out!
