The Movie: The first in Lucio Fulci's Gates of Hell trilogy, City of the Dead (also known as The Gates of Hell) is a Fulci masterpiece; a brooding and atmospheric tale of the dead returning to life and devouring the living. Following the suicidal hanging of a priest, the gates of hell open up and carnage is unleashed - it's up to an intrepid investigative journalist and his plucky companion to close the gates before All Saints Day to prevent them from taking over the Earth. The Gory Death: There are a few to choose from (this is Fulci after all), including a wonderfully over the top scene in which a woman cries blood and vomits out her own innards, but it's the drill through the head death sequence which sticks in the memory. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fg5n4qHhwv8 Fulci cuts between the man's terrified expression and an increasing close-up of the drill before the two finally meet, his screams singing out until the drill emerges from the other side of his face.
