10 Great 21st Century Sci-Fi Films That Bombed At The Box Office
1. Annihilation
It may be unfair to call Alex Garland's cerebral sci-fi film a box office flop as it was released internationally on Netflix but it was still shown in North America and China to a disappointing total of just $43.1 million.
The history behind the decision to pull the film from international screenings is as fascinating and horrific as the plot of the film itself. After a test screening of the film one of the studio producers called the final product "too intellectual" for mainstream audiences and gave an extensive list of last second changes he wanted made before its release.
Garland, however, was unwilling to compromise and the decision was made to release it on Netflix to avoid further loss of earnings. Thankfully, the sci-fi horror found an audience in streaming and has proven Garland to be one of the most exciting directors working in Hollywood today.
