10 Great 21st Century Sci-Fi Films That Bombed At The Box Office

2. Blade Runner 2049

Children Of Men
Warner Bros.

Considering the original Blade Runner was a box office flop it is no real surprise that its long awaited sequel Blade Runner 2049 also bombed. What is surprising is that a studio gave this ill-fated sequel $185 million to play with in the first place.

Denis Villeneuve earns himself the title of visionary director, a title which had previously been held by Guillermo Del Toro, in this beautiful nuanced drama which may even exceed the original's stunning visuals and imaginative storytelling.

While it did ultimately make $260.5 million at the box office when taking into account the film's hidden marketing cost (usually the same cost as the budget) Blade Runner 2049 lost the studio a substantial amount. With his upcoming adaptation of Dune on the horizon, Villeneuve may become known as a director of visual masterpieces which no one sees at the cinema.

Hopefully audiences will prove him wrong in the long run.

BUDGET: $185 million
