8. Guy Pearce

One of the most successful stars to have got their start in Aussie favourites Neighbours and Home and Away, Guy Pearce has had a varied and colourful career in cinema and television where he is an Emmy winner for his work on Mildred Pierce.

A true chameleon, Pearce can seemingly play just about anything from Outback drag queen Felicia Jollygoodfellow to King Edward VIII to Shane Black’s rather eccentric interpretation of The Mandarin. Of particular note is his exceptional lead role in Memento, where his work as vengeful amnesiac Leonard Shelby veers between sympathetic and chilling, as we discover the truth of the character’s situation. His intense work in films such as The Proposition, The Rover and Lawless have further cemented his dramatic chops over the years.

Despite frequently delivering lively performances to much critical acclaim, acknowledgement from the Academy continues to elude him in the 30+ years since he first made his way onto the scene. With forthcoming features being predominantly action and science fiction oriented, it seems rather unlikely this will change for Pearce in 2020.
