When it comes to silent movie and early "talkie" movie stars during Hollywood's Golden Age, you can't get much classier than Greta Garbo. She starred in a total of 28 films spanning a career of financial successes and critical acclaim. At the age of 35, when her career was in somewhat of a decline, she announced a retirement from movies and never looked back.

From that point forward, producers hounded her to come back to work, but she declined every offer. She even shunned public life completely and became something of a hermit who preferred her privacy above all else.

Garbo spent almost 50 years not working in Hollywood as a retired actress, but she enjoyed her time as an avid art collector who amassed a collection valued in the millions when she died in 1990 at the age of 84.

Though she removed herself from the limelight, Greta Garbo is a true Hollywood icon who will always be remembered for her amazing body of work.
